How Basically Babies Has Grown With Changing Community Needs

Community needs can change over time, and organizations that serve those communities need to be able to adapt alongside them. Over time, a small community initiative can grow as more people become involved and the need for its work increases.

Over more than 30 years, Basically Babies has grown and adapted while maintaining its focus on supporting families with young children. What began in 1994 with six young mothers sorting baby clothing in a basement has grown into an established charitable organization serving families in both Edmonton and Calgary.

Learning What Families Needed

As Basically Babies grew, its understanding of the families it served grew as well. The organization developed relationships with agencies and professionals who work directly with families, helping identify where support was needed and how resources could be directed effectively.

These relationships have played an important role in the organization's development. Rather than remaining the same as it was when it first began, Basically Babies has continued to adapt its approach as demand has changed.

Over time, this has allowed the organization to grow from a handful of volunteers into a larger operation with the capacity to support families across Alberta.

Bringing the Model to Calgary

The expansion into Calgary gave Basically Babies the opportunity to bring its existing approach to another Alberta community. By establishing a presence there in 2018, the organization was able to extend its support to families experiencing extreme need in Calgary while continuing the work it had built in Edmonton.

This expansion reflects how Basically Babies has continued to grow while staying connected to its original purpose. Its reach has changed over the years, but its focus on supporting families with young children has remained consistent.

Building the Organization Behind the Mission

Over more than 30 years, Basically Babies had to develop while continuing to focus on supporting families with young children. What began as a small, informal effort has changed considerably as the organization has grown and reached more communities.

This adaptability is reflected in how the organization has developed its operations over time. The organization started with a few boxes of donated clothing sorted in a basement and eventually became a formally registered charity, with the accountability and structure that comes with it. Today, Basically Babies operates with the support of several hundred volunteers and maintains an inventory of roughly 100,000 items at any given time.

Those early relationships have also grown into a broader network of partners. Its current network includes agencies working in areas such as housing, education, employment, legal support, substance abuse recovery, and healthcare. This broader network provides more points of connection within the community and reflects the range of circumstances families may be facing when they turn to Basically Babies for support.

Why This Matters to Flourish Group

At Flourish Group, we believe long-term success requires an understanding of the environment in which an organization operates. This applies to businesses as well as community organizations. Strong foundations are important, but so is the ability to adapt as circumstances change.

As a family-owned business, we value this type of long-term thinking. Building stronger communities takes time, and it requires organizations and individuals to recognize changing needs and continue finding practical ways to respond. Basically Babies carries that same spirit forward, offering hands-on support to families across Alberta.

We are proud to support Basically Babies as it continues to grow alongside the communities it serves, and we look forward to seeing its impact continue to expand across Alberta.
