For First Tee Alberta, it means something else: this is when a significant part of the program actually happens. First Tee Alberta's School Program runs right inside PE class, so picking up school again this September also means picking up a golf club. The program is now entering its second year, continuing to bring golf and life skills directly into the school environment.
More Than a Golf Program
First Tee Alberta uses golf as a structured platform for building life skills, not just swing mechanics. Kids start on the fundamentals, learning the game and connecting it to everyday life. From there, the program grows with them. They build interpersonal skills, then work on goal-setting, then learn conflict resolution and resilience. By the time participants reach the later stages, they're focused on leadership, career exposure, and giving back to their community.
Much of this happens directly inside the school system. First Tee's School Program is embedded in physical education classes. Kids get exposure to both physical skill-building and values-based lessons during the regular school day. It meets them where they already are instead of asking families to find an extra activity to add to busy schedules.
A Curriculum That Follows Kids Into the Classroom
What's compelling about this approach is the evidence that it works beyond the course. Independent evaluation of the First Tee program found that participants reported meaningful carryover into their academic and social lives. They reported higher confidence in social skills and stronger academic confidence. Nearly all participants said they applied what they learned at First Tee directly to school.
