What a Layette Actually is
When most people hear the word layette, they picture a small basket of baby items. What Basically Babies delivers is something far more deliberate than that.
Each layette is a complete first-year baby wardrobe, approximately 120 items in sizes from newborn to 24 months, carefully sorted, laundered, pressed, and packaged for either a baby boy or baby girl. Every piece is checked. Nothing goes out unless it is clean, mended, and presentation-ready. The retail value of each layette sits at approximately $1,400, but through donated items and volunteer support, Basically Babies is able to produce each one for around $400.
That gap between what a family receives and what it costs to produce is made possible by over 20,000 volunteer hours contributed annually, an inventory of more than 100,000 baby items, and a community of donors who keep that supply moving.
Why the Presentation Matters
Basically Babies is deliberate about the quality of what families receive. The families who receive layettes are often navigating some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable, escaping abusive situations, working through addiction, arriving as refugees, or parenting as teenagers without a support system in place. A poorly packaged box of used clothing sends a message. A beautifully prepared, thoughtfully assembled gift sends a different one entirely.
Basically Babies believes every family, regardless of circumstance, deserves to feel that their child has worth and that their community cares about them. The layette is designed to communicate exactly that, something a new parent would genuinely be proud to receive.
The Scale of the Operation
What started in 1994 as six mothers sorting baby clothing in a basement has grown into a full-scale charitable operation now serving both Edmonton and Calgary. Basically Babies maintains an inventory of over 100,000 items, requires approximately 19,000 sleepers annually to meet demand, and runs close to 1,000 loads of laundry each year to ensure every item meets their standard before it leaves the warehouse.
Layettes are distributed through a network of partnering agencies, inner-city organizations, healthcare providers, shelters, and others, who identify families in extreme need and request a layette on their behalf. This model ensures that every layette reaches a family at the moment they need it most.
Why Flourish Group Supports This Work
Flourish Group understands that strong communities are built on foundations laid early. The work Basically Babies does is not abstract. It shows up in the lives of individual families at one of the most critical and often most vulnerable moments they will face.
Supporting Basically Babies reflects our belief that meaningful community investment goes beyond financial contribution. It is about standing behind organizations that show up with care, consistency, and a commitment to human dignity, values that align closely with how we approach our own work. We are proud to support Basically Babies and look forward to seeing their reach continue to grow across Alberta.
